Team day with a difference - practicing tee shots!
On 15.08.2023 we went to Oberhausen.
What did we do there?
We had a different team day and played TopGolf.
For almost all team members it was new territory to practice a tee shot, but the more often you did it, the further the tee shots went.
We have a lot of fun!
Energy transition - New priority program focuses on the Carnot battery
The new Priority Program 2403 "Carnot batteries: inverse design from the market to the molecule" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) focuses on Carnot batteries, in which excess energy is stored in the form of heat in liquids. The three research groups from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum are involved in the program, which has been funded for an initial three years from July 2023 with around 6.5 million euros.
Prof. Dr. Valentin Bertsch, Prof. Dr. Francesca Di Mare and Prof. Dr. Roland Span and Dr. Monika Thol are involved.

Jonas Finke visits Energy Systems Analysis group at ETH Zürich
From May to July 2023, Jonas is a visiting PhD student at the Energy Systems Analysis group at ETH Zürich.
During this time, he works with Febin Kachirayil and Prof. Russell McKenna on combining different multi-objective optimisation methods to better support decision making for the energy transition in municipalities.
Many thanks for the hospitality and we are looking forward to a continued collaboration!
Research stay at the University College Dublin - Christine Nowak
For the next few months until the end of August, our employee and PhD student Christine Nowak is on a research stay in University College Dublin (UCD).
There she will be looking into thermal flexibility options in residential buildings for the countries of Ireland and Germany and how these flexibilities can be used to reduce emissions when using heat pumps.
Now, at the beginning of her time in UCD, she had the opportunity to present her research plans for her stay to the NexSys project group and the UCD Energy Institute.
Many thanks to NexSys for the great hosting and catering afterwards!
Enerday 2023
On 05 May 2023, ENERDAY 2023
17th International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology, took place in Dresden.
It was hosted by the Chair of Energy Economics at TU Dresden, supported by TU Berlin and DIW Berlin.
Sophie Pathe presented her work on "Sustainable Power Systems Transformation of Industrial Regions: Insights from Energy System Modelling".
It was a terrific event with inspiring discussions.
Award VDI - Florian Nix
On 03.03.2023 the general meeting of the Bochum district association of the VDI took place. As in the past years, excellent final theses of the three Bochum universities were honored. Also from our chair a graduate was honored: Florian Nix, who wrote his master's thesis on "Optimizing the energy supply of an alpine club hut with the energy system model Backbone" under the supervision of Leonie Plaga. The thesis is particularly characterized by its practical relevance and the dedicated and independent processing by Mr. Nix. All award winners presented their work in short lectures, which were received and discussed with interest by the visitors. After the awarding of the certificates, the work was rounded off by the traditional kale dinner.
We congratulate Florian Nix and thank the Bochum district association of the VDI!
Move to the data center
The numerous Windows workstations also include our HPC, for simulations as well as model calculations.
With the move of the HPC (High Performance Computing) cluster into the new
RUB data center, our entire cluster was connected to a redundant network and power supply.
EERA Energy Systems Integration meeting 23.-25. Januar 2023
From January 23-25, the Chair of Energy Systems and Energy Economics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum hosted the biannual meeting of the Joint Programme Energy Systems Integration (JP-ESI) of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).
In addition to the regular steering committee meeting, a total of 4 focus workshops on digitalisation, pilot projects, consumer behaviour and hydrogen discussed the respective current state of research and future opportunities for collaboration.
to the program overview!
