LS EE - 2023

October 2024

Chair Excursion took place in Mülheim an der Ruhr
This year's chair excursion took place in Mülheim an der Ruhr on 1st of October 2024.
After a walk along the sights of the city, we were warmly welcomed at the medl GmbH municipal utilities.
During an exciting tour of the facilities, we visited the CHP plant and learnt about and discussed the municipal heat transition and the associated challenges.
Afterwards, we let the day unwind at the Restaurant Ronja.

We congratulate Jonas on his PhD Theses!
We from EE congratulate Jonas Finke the successful completion of his
PhD Theses on 15.07.2024 with the title:
"Advancing multi-criteria energy systems analysis – new links of multi-objective optimisation, modelling to generate alternatives and energy systems modelling".

System Analysis Workshop

On the 9th of July 2024 the system analysis workshop "Modeling approaches for energy storage in different markets" as part of the priority project SPP2403 "Carnot Batteries: Inverse Design from Markets to Molecules" took place at the Chair of Energy Systems and Energy Economics. Together with project partners from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), the University of Duisburg Essen (UDE) and Carnegie Mellon University, we exchanged and discussed individual approaches to storage modeling, important aspects of the modeling parameters, such as exogeneity and endogeneity, and methods of cost estimation for Carnot batteries. It was a successful workshop with many new insights, ideas and possible topics for further collaboration.

EURO Copenhagen

From the 30th of June to the 3rd of July, the 33rd European Conference on Operational Research (EURO) took place in Copenhagen, hosted by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Six of us had the opportunity to present and discuss our research in the following presentations:

  • Leonie Plaga: Enhancing electricity system robustness through the application of a new time series cluster algorithm
  • David Huckebrink: Integrated flexible heating and cooling under climate uncertainty in a European energy systems model
  • Jonas Finke: Linking modelling to generate alternatives and market equilibria - On the economic interpretation of near-cost-optimal solutions in energy system models
  • Silke Johanndeiter: Price formation and intersectoral distributional effects in a fully decarbonized European electricity market
  • Katharina Esser: Multi-Objective Optimisation for the Inverse Analysis of Design Requirements for Low Technology Readiness Level technologies from an Energy System Perspective
  • Valentin Bertsch: Electrical energy storage investment requirements and operating characteristics in a gradually defossilised European power system

All in all, it was a successful conference with lots of exciting topics and new and old acquaintances.

Experience practical science!

Experience practical science! During our tour of the Calcis lime works in Warstein, we gained valuable insights into lime production. This knowledge is directly incorporated into our KalkH2 project, in which we are investigating how hydrogen-based energy sources can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the German lime industry.
After an informative company presentation, the friendly staff gave us a tour of the plant and even allowed us to inspect a lime kiln (see picture). In addition to Viktor Schüßler and Julian Röder, Marlena Wissel from BV Kalk and the students Nico Falk and Finn Simons were also present.

VDI Award

The general meeting of the Bochum district association of the VDI took place on 16.02.2024.
As in previous years, outstanding theses from the three Bochum universities were honored here.
Two graduates from our department were honored: Jonathan Zerbe, who wrote his master's thesis entitled "Climate-neutral heating and cooling supply strategies for the Ruhr-Universität Bochum" under the supervision of Michel Gross, and Katharina Esser, who wrote her master's thesis entitled "Dealing with uncertainties in the energy supply of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum with "Modeling to Generate Alternatives" under the supervision of Jonas Finke.
The theses are particularly characterized by their focus on the energy system of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
The respective topics were worked on by Mr. Zerbe and Ms. Esser in a committed and independent manner and offer an important contribution to strategies for decarbonizing the campus.
Award winners presented their work in short specialist lectures, which were received with interest and discussed by the visitors.
After the awarding of the certificates, the evening was rounded off with the traditional kale dinner.
We congratulate Jonathan Zerbe and Katharina Esser and thank the Bochum District Association of the VDI!
